I have just finished reading A pocket full of stars by Aisha Bushby and I am bereft! It is a story about the relationship between mothers and daughters and the complications that can arise. It is about what it means to be a good friend. It is about hope in times of great worry. It is about doing the right thing. It is about being brave when you are scared. It is about finding your roots. It is about standing up for what you believe in. I wish this book had been around when I was the same age as Safiya as those words would have meant so much (in fact, my mid 30s self rejoiced and then cried a little). As a debut novel it is hopeful and superb and I simply can’t wait to see what follows next! Such a great book also deserves to be on the shortlist for the Children’s Book award 2020.
